Emancipation Ritual (An Island View of the Completion of an Idea), 2022.

Polaroid 600 film, Three Plumes Matches, matchbox, concrete.

Emancipation Ritual was a ritual process of attempting to create a circle with matches, which were struck and moved across the blank Polaroid. It was formed upon meditating on the completion of an idea — thinking of being on an island, or other boundaried space — and utilizing matches as metaphor for sparks of ideas and people, and the Polaroid as the potential space to be filled. I attempted, over and over again, to make a complete circle, and failed each time. After repeating the process a number of times, I realized a circle had indeed been formed, but at great cost of burnout of many matches, who had not even been used to their full potential — much like ambitious ideas from people who unwaveringly desire for more. In addition, the potential space had not even been half filled.
