GESTATION: Mythos
Mixed Media Installation (Polaroid Spectra film, Polaroid 600 film, Polaroid silk satin print, bottles, sugarcane, chalk, water, broad leaf thyme, goldenrod, wire, twine). Varied Dimensions. 2022
GESTATION: Mythos is an installation based on the ELEMENTS series I began in 2021, exploring experimental methods of instant photography through the utilization of the five elements: air, fire, earth, water, and ether. These were all taken on a Polaroid Spectra camera on expired Polaroid instant film. Time is evidenced through the entire process, with different layers of intention: sometimes the process takes 3 days, a week, a moon cycle…The outcome is always different but the feeling is always the same. An intentional recording of time, occurrence, a happening. A change has been made here. This installation also explores cycles of death and rebirth as experienced through plants. The title and quote written in chalk are based on the musican Maxwell’s last song of his 1998 album Embrya.
“I looked on, hoping they would understand the growth
Not quite sure if I’d ever begin to myself
I would soon learn that ones here before me
Would usher in the next trinity of beings
I would soon learn that this
Was the scratch in the surface yet to be formed
Was I prepared? this would be the domino effect
Of a million questions unanswered.”
